According to Veronica Koman a Human Rights Lawyer and West Papuan Prominent Activist ,Protesters commemorated Human Rights Day and demanded a long list of human rights violations in West Papua to be resolved.
On human rights day protests in many places were shut down even before they started and dozens of West Papuan activists arrested.
There was a heavy deployment of Indonesian Police officers in West Papua leaving the residents too intimidated to speak.

Manokwari, West Papua:
Armed paramilitary police occupied a legal aid office for around 5 hours in the morning.
The Police interrogated the staffers aggressively leaving them terrified.
The West Papua Police Chief and the Manokwari Police Chief “intimidated” the Legal Aid Research, Study and Development Institute (LP3BH) on the 71st International Human Rights Day.
Eye witness account says approximately 15 members of the Maluku Police Regional Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) under the command of the West Papua Regional Police Chief and the Manokwari Regional Police Chief occupied the Manokwari LP3BH office wielding weapons in the office on Jalan Danau Snow No.18 Manokwari.
Sorong City, West Papua:
Students and Young people held a long March from the campus of Muhamadiyah Sorong University (UMS) to the mayor’s office demanding an end to racism and release of all detained political prisoners.
The students lamented about the increasing humanitarian abuses by the Indonesian security forces and systematic suppression of human rights in West Papua.
The mass action waited for Sorong mayor from 11.30am to 1pm.

84 people have so far been charged with treason in 3 months over rightful demand of self-determination for West Papua.
Raising the morning star flag attracts a sentence up to 15 years.
West Papua Protests In 2019:
A series of protests by Papuans in Indonesia and West Papua began on 19 August 2019 to the October. The month long protests mainly took place across Papua, in response to the Surabaya arrests of 43 Papuan students for alleged disrespecting the Indonesian flag. Many of the protests involved thousands of participants, protests in Surabaya called for an independence referendum for West Papua.
In several locations, the protests Indonesian Security forces fired live gunshots to disperse protestors resulting to reprisal attacks from protestors leading to massive riots, resulting into the destruction of government buildings such as in Wamena, Sorong, and Jayapura. Clashes between protesters protecting themselves from extremely aggressive and brutal police resulted in injuries, with over 32 people killed .
