57 Years on Africa needs a Re-think

57 YEARS ON- Africa needs a rethink

John Moono

The African continent has had it’s fair share of problems and the people of the continent have suffered adversely from these problems. A number of soils of the continent fought tirelessly to see the African continent get emancipated from the imperialists. 57 years on Africa seriously need a rethink of how it approaches it’s developmental agenda. The sons of the soil from the yesteryears desire to see a more self reliant Africa.
Here are some thought provoking thoughts for the African continent today:

1 Kwame Nkrumah
” I am not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me”

  1. Professor John Mbiti
” I am because WE are and since we are, therefore I AM”
  2. Patrice Lumumba
” African Unity and solidarity are no longer dreams. They must be expressed in decisions.”
  3. Thomas Sankara
“I think the most important thing is to bring people to a point where they have self-confidence and understand that they can at last be authors of their own well being.”
  4. Patrice Lumumba
“We know that Africa is neither French, nor British, nor American, nor Russian that it is African. We know the objects of the West. Yesterday they divided us on the level of a tribe, clan and Village…… They want to create antagonistic blocs, satellites.”
  5. Nelson Mandela
” Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
  6. Patrice Lumumba
” Political independence has no meaning if it is not accompanied by rapid economic and social development.”
  7. Julius K Nyerere
“Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated.”
  8. Samora Machel
“International solidarity is not an act of Charity: It is an act of unity between allies fighting on different terrains toward the same objective. The foremost of these objectives is to aid the development of humanity to the highest level possible.”
  9. Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe
” If don’t handle our independence very well, colonizers will come back in the form of investors.”

Above all this
Kenneth Kaunda summed up the need for African Unity by saying
” Ambition never comes to an end.”

Africa needs to position itself as the next world economic giant because of the enormous potential. May 25 is Africa Freedom Day is a day to remind the Africans of the sacrifice made by the Freedom fighters.
