OPM/FPM: Thank you the government and the People of Vanuatu for defending West Papua in the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly General Debate

Father Walter Lini and Mr Tanggama , formal meeting of Vanuatu and West Papua c.1980s.

Mr. Jeffrey Bomanak Chairman of the Organisasi Papua Merdeka/Free Papua Movement on behalf of the people of West Papua thanks the government and the people of Vanuatu. May the Lord continue to bless and lead us into our desired end in the future that we want.  As they say, ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’, Vanuatu as nation and her people will be treasured by the people of West Papua for all time to come.

The people and the government of Vanuatu have always been there since the foundation of the nation of Vanuatu and continue to provide that shelter, friendship and Melanesian brotherhood for the people of West Papua up till now. Since 2004 Vanuatu has stepped up its advocacy on behalf of West Papuans in the region and international fora. After the 2010 passing of ‘Wantok blo yumi bill’ Vanuatu continue to mention West Papua and its peoples’ suffering under the hands of Indonesian colonialism up till now in every session of the United Nations General Assembly, for that we are deeply grateful.

We have noticed that out of 18 Pacific Islands Countries and 79 African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) groups of states that resolved to address the human rights issues in West Papua in their resolutions, only Vanuatu our traditional ‘Wantok’ continue to mention West Papua in Geneva Human Rights Council Meetings and UNGA on the human rights situation in West Papua. We hope that the others will still join Vanuatu one day to address the commitments made in the resolutions through PIF and ACP.

For now, the OPM as the major actor of the West Papua struggle for liberation encourage both the people of Vanuatu and West Papua to continue to maintain the struggle against colonialism and capitalism in West Papua. The fight is still on; we encourage our fighters in the jungles of West Papua to continue engage with the dogs that are coming into our land and also encourage all our diplomats abroad to maintain self-discipline and professionalism in all your conducts to represent the nation of West Papua in the world.

Our struggle has been paid by the blood of those who fought and died before us and their blood is calling for us to stand up and continue the fight they left on our hands. We remember the founding fathers of the nation of Vanuatu Father Walter Lini for the foundations that him and others laid for us to maintain the struggle. As Father Walter Lini said, “Vanuatu would not be truly independent until all of Melanesia is free”.

God bless the people of Vanuatu and West Papua.

Jeffrey Bomanak

Chairman
